Stem cells can self-renew and differentiate into specialized cell types. Embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells can form all cell types of the body and depend on the transcription factors POU5F1 (OCT4), SOX2 and NANOG, while adult (somatic) stem cells, such as hematopoietic, mesenchymal, neural and intestinal stem cells, maintain and repair specific tissues. Stem cell self-renewal and differentiation are regulated by signaling pathways including WNT, Notch, Hedgehog, TGF-beta/BMP and FGF. Stem cell gene expression is studied in regenerative medicine, development and cancer stem cell research.
