Signal transduction is the process by which cells detect signals such as hormones, growth factors, cytokines and stress and convert them into changes in gene expression and behavior. Major signal transduction pathways include receptor tyrosine kinase, MAPK, PI3K-AKT, JAK/STAT, NF-kappaB, TGF-beta, WNT, Notch, Hedgehog and cAMP/PKA signaling. Each pathway ends in specific transcription factors that switch on characteristic target genes, so measuring these genes provides a readout of pathway activity. Dysregulated signal transduction contributes to cancer, inflammation and metabolic disease.
