Endothelial cells line the inside of all blood and lymphatic vessels and regulate vascular tone, permeability, blood clotting, inflammation and the formation of new vessels (angiogenesis). Endothelial cells express characteristic markers such as PECAM1 (CD31), CDH5 (VE-cadherin), VWF, KDR (VEGFR2) and TEK (TIE2), and produce mediators such as nitric oxide (NOS3), endothelin and prostacyclin. Endothelial dysfunction, marked by increased adhesion molecules such as VCAM1, ICAM1 and SELE, contributes to atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes and tumor angiogenesis.
