The cytoskeleton is a dynamic network of actin microfilaments, microtubules and intermediate filaments that gives cells their shape and enables movement, division and intracellular transport. Actin dynamics are controlled by nucleators (Arp2/3, formins), severing and capping proteins and Rho family GTPases, while microtubules are organized by tubulins and microtubule associated proteins and serve as tracks for kinesin and dynein motors. Cytoskeletal regulators are involved in cell migration, polarity, adhesion and mitosis, and changes in their expression contribute to cancer invasion and neurodegenerative disease.
