Cell adhesion molecules allow cells to attach to each other and to the extracellular matrix (ECM), and are essential for tissue architecture, development, immune cell trafficking and wound healing. The major families include cadherins, which form calcium dependent cell-cell junctions; integrins, which bind ECM proteins such as collagen, fibronectin and laminin; the immunoglobulin superfamily (ICAMs, VCAM1, PECAM1); and selectins. Adhesion receptors also act as signaling molecules, and changes in their expression contribute to inflammation, fibrosis and tumor invasion and metastasis.
